National Truck Driver Appreciation Week Spotlight #2: Roby Dezern
Today, we’re continuing our National Truck Driver Appreciation Week celebration by spotlighting another outstanding truck driver in our carrier network. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is an annual celebration to show gratitude to the people who perform one of our country’s most demanding yet essential jobs.
Yesterday, we kicked off the week with a spotlight on Willie Alexander, an owner-operator who has been a truck driver for 32 years. Today, we’re introducing you to Roby Dezern, a hot shot driver with Fetchin Freight 4 All, LLC who was called to the industry later in life but has quickly built a successful business as an owner-operator.
Q: How long have you been a truck driver, and what made you get into this industry?
A: I started in 2017, so I’ve been driving for about five and a half years now. I’m a retired electrician, so I was looking for something to fill my time and make some extra money. At first, I became a camper salesman after retiring. One of the people I sold a camper to makes a living by transporting campers, so I started talking to him more about his job. I liked what I heard — it sounded a lot better than making cold calls — so I went out and bought a Ram 3500 and a trailer.
Q: What are some of the typical challenges you face in this job?
A: Navigating the economy and the changing price of fuel is an everyday challenge, especially when you’re an owner-operator. But I always say that if you work hard, you can make a good living at this job.
Q: What do you like most about this job?
A: As an owner-operator, I have the ultimate flexibility to do my own thing; I can choose when I take time off and where I want to go. Overall, I find this job to be really relaxing.
Q: What are you most proud of since starting this new chapter in your life five years ago?
A: Being your own boss has its perks, but it also means you’re responsible for every aspect of it. I do all the paperwork. I do all the maintenance on my truck. I’m proud to have my own business that I started and built from the ground up — especially to have it through COVID when the entire country shut down.
Q: What do you like most about working with TA?
A: The thing about TA is they are always on time, courteous, and willing to help. TA has been a joy to work with. I try to do a good job and be on time, and they are always willing to help me. They get to know my business and preferences — like the lanes I run most often — and help me find loads that fit those preferences. TA has always been accommodating.
“Roby has always been a pleasure to work with. In fact, the shipper on the lane he ran for us would request him constantly. You know you have a good carrier when he is consistently being requested by a shipper. Always courteous, always professional – Fetchin’ Freight is a topnotch carrier partner, and we are grateful for the relationship we were able to build with Roby!”

Q: What goals do you have for the future of your business?
A: I’m getting ready to turn 63, so my goal is to retire in two years. But my daily goal is to leave home, be safe, and return home safely to my wife and dogs.
Q: You found your way to trucking later in life. What advice do you have for others looking to make this kind of change?
A: I’ve talked to people from every background you can think of, especially traveling nationwide. I always tell people that to succeed in this business, you must be a self-starter and a hard worker. You have to be diligent, patient, and fair to other people. And if you follow that, you can make a good living doing this.
Q: What are things people can do to show appreciation for truck drivers?
A: Courtesy is most important. People don’t always understand what these truckers are dealing with. Truck drivers are out on the road, away from their families for days, weeks, or even months at a time. So be courteous when dealing with truck drivers, especially out on the road. Highway courtesy is a real thing. When you pull out in front of a truck because you’re in a rush, you’re adding so much wear and tear on that truck. People don’t always think about that.
For National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (and every week), practice your highway courtesy and join us in showing appreciation for the hard work and dedication of every truck driver. Be sure to come back tomorrow when we spotlight another amazing truck driver.
