Make.Ship.Happen.® Part 8: Implementing Technology to Improve Warehousing Operations [CASE STUDIES]
We’re back with another installment of our Make.Ship.Happen.® campaign. In our last post, we talked about some of the ways TA Services collaborates with shippers to elevate warehouse operations, including geographic coverage, warehouse safety, and building efficient operations.
Today, we’re diving deeper into opportunities that will improve your warehousing operations. Below are five tips we recommend for implementing new technology. Check out the case studies at the end of the article showcasing how TA Services put these tips into action for two of our warehousing customers.
1. Thoroughly Assess Your Needs and Goals
Before making any decisions regarding changes to your warehouse operations, it’s important to thoroughly assess your current processes and determine your goals for the future. Consider your current pain points and operational bottlenecks. What gaps do you currently have in your system or processes? It’s also essential to assess what is working well today. What capabilities does your current system have that you’re unwilling, or unable, to give up? What capabilities will you need in the future that you don’t have today?
Be sure to include any necessary stakeholders from the early stages of the decision-making process — including warehouse staff, managers, and IT personnel. Include the people who will be most affected by any changes and those that will be vital to the implementation process. Getting their feedback and buy-in will help you choose the best solution for your operations.
2. Consider Any Necessary Training or Equipment Upgrades
If, after taking stock of your current processes, you’ve decided a new system would be a beneficial update to your existing operations, you’ll need to determine the most effective and efficient implementation of your new system.
Your teams will be more likely to accept the changes and work more effectively if you provide thorough training on the new system and process changes. Encourage and respond to questions and feedback throughout the process. Communication is key when implementing a new system.
3. Be Open to Alternative Solutions
While you may go into this process expecting to completely replace your legacy technology with a brand new system, it may not be the most efficient or cost effective solution for your needs. Sometimes, the best option is to maintain your legacy system while implementing a secondary solution to fill gaps rather than completely replace your existing technology.
For this option, consider ways to eliminate inefficiencies that may result from using two warehouse systems. Implementing a middleware is a great way to minimize inconsistencies between the legacy system and the new system.
4. Continue to Evaluate Your Processes and Success
Define success up front but be prepared to redefine your goals throughout the process. As you embark on this significant change, you may identify inefficiencies you weren’t previously aware of, and your business goals may change over time.
It’s important to consistently evaluate your new system and procedures. Be prepared to make changes that will continue to improve your operations in the future.
5. Lean on a Trusted Partner for Implementation
Sometimes, even the most thorough planning won’t ensure the successful implementation of a new system. With costs, resources, and goals to consider, many shippers find taking on the project alone to be a daunting task.
That’s where a great 3PL partnership comes into play. TA Services works with customers to discover their inefficiencies and helps select the system that is right for their current needs and future goals. Our support teams provide assistance both during the changeover and the launch of a new system. TA Services will also help refine and determine new goals over time.
If it’s time to upgrade your technology and improve your warehousing operations, use the tips above for guidance to ensure a smooth implementation process. For extra help, consider utilizing the expertise of a trusted 3PL partner like TA Services to get the job done with you!
